Consider this a 10,000 mile update for this hardcore little truck, because that’s how long I’ve had it. Purchased at 193k miles we are about to cross over the 204k threshold on the odometer and thus far it has been problem free. Since replacing the timing belt and water pump and doing a flush of all the major fluids, I found myself struggling with the power steering and realized that the persistent drips that I was finding beneath the truck every morning was in fact power steering fluid. While the gearbox seemed to be tight, the pump itself was leaking pretty badly, so out it came and I tore it apart to install a seal kit. Once that was all buttoned up and new fluid pumped though the system, the steering is back to being smooth and powerful. Still a bit of wander but nothing to be overly concerned about. I also, having no idea how many miles the tires had covered, decided to replace the old Primewells with something that I would have more confidence in. All four wheels had somewhere along the way been replaced with a set of 2nd gen Toyota 4-Runner 15"rs and larger 31" tires, but the spare remained on the OEM rim and was in fact the original 235 size. Having been nestled on the back of the truck in its cover, I decided to take a closer look and according to the date code, it was manufactured in the year 2000. Well I’ll have to avoid using that one, though I kind of like the look of the original rim and as luck would have it the ‘87 Raider in a local junkyard has all 5 still attached. May be worth snagging them next time I am up there.
